The World Bicycle Relief Trailblazer Award honors those who challenge conventional thinking around the complex issues of transportation, poverty, social justice, and access while illuminating a new path forward with innovative and bold ideas that have the power to transform millions of lives.
Queen of Pain and long-time World Bicycle Relief supporter Rebecca Rusch’s passion for girls’ education is matched only by her commitment to push the physical limits of what’s possible for a good cause. In 2016, Rebecca summited and descended Mt. Kilimanjaro by bike to help mobilize Kenyan girls, whom she met following her ride. In this unprecedented year, she reimagined her Giddy Up Challenge and RPI gravel event to include virtual riders around the world and benefit World Bicycle Relief’s global communities in need.
Hotelier citizenM founded its charity, citizenMovement, to shorten the distance between people and opportunities. A corporate partner that integrates World Bicycle Relief’s mission, citizenMovement has engaged staff and guests to raise more than £675k to date. In 2019, citizenM provided 124 bicycles for students in Kafue, Zambia, on World Bicycle Day. This was just a small part of the 3,500 bicycles that they have donated through their programmes running in their hotels. Throughout this year’s global crisis, citizenM has given people a safe place to call home while continuing to mobilize communities that need it most.
